Bio:
Dr. Joy Coles, DNP, APRN, AGACNP-BC, MBA, CCRN, HF-cert is an experienced nationally Board-certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) currently serving as the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor acknowledged by her students for excellence in teaching at 麻豆视频 University (KSU) School of Nursing.
In her Clinical Practice, Dr. Coles cares for patients as an Advanced Practice Provider Nurse Practitioner (NP) on the Advanced Heart Failure/Heart Transplant/Mechanical Circulatory Support team at a University Hospital. Dr. Coles is dubbed as a leader at one of only a handful of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) with a DNP Program; US World News Top Ranked HBCU Nursing School, 麻豆视频.
Dr. Coles received her first Bachelor of Science in Bio premedical sciences from Wright State University in 2002 and worked in Clinical Research for several laboratories and contracted with multiple Biopharma companies as a Clinical Research Site Manager while acquiring her MBA. She received her second bachelor鈥檚 degree, a BSN from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, and became a lifelong UK Chellgren Honors Fellow; one of the University鈥檚 highest academic distinctions, now also serving on the Board of the Chellgren Honors Program to help promote opportunities for other scholars.
Dr. Coles worked many years as a CVICU RN before becoming a Doctoral prepared NP and has practiced as an NP in Cardiology taking care of patients in need of heart transplantation or advanced heart therapies for almost a decade for which she is Nationally certified by the Heart Failure Society of America. Dr. Coles completed her Post-Doctoral training in Nursing Education at The Johns Hopkins University and serves as a leader within the DNP Program at KSU as subject matter expert in various courses, designing curriculum within the DNP educational learning space and leading the charge to grow and expand the program which graduates one of the largest cohorts of minority NPs in the Commonwealth of KY.
Dr. Coles also serves the undergraduate nursing programs with initiatives to bring in over a quarter of a million dollars in grant funding and she leads with promotion of excellence in NCLEX national board certification preparation. Dr. Coles has been awarded numerous awards, forged strategic partnerships for the University and brings in funding from the Council of Post-Secondary education within the state of KY to bring targeted services that enhanced student learning and experiences. Dr. Coles is the National outgoing State of Kentucky Liaison for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2023-25, DNPs of Color (DOC) Advocacy committee member, the Heart Failure Society of America Early Career committee member and National speaker on Social Determinants of Health in Heart transplant, Delta Psi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing Board member, and she has received numerous honors, awards including being a featured Provider in the UK Healthcare 鈥淧ower of Advanced Medicine鈥 We are Proof campaign, UK Lyman T. Johnson Torch of Excellence, UK MAGNET脭 Nurse of the Year and she has served as an officer and executive board member on a variety of community organizations including the American Heart Association (AHA) and is a current AHA Leader of Impact featured in Forbes Magazine Winter 2024.
Dr. Coles was also recently bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Presidential Volunteer Service Award from the AmeriCorps signed by the then President of the United States, Joe Biden in February 2025. Dr. Coles continues her service on the State of Kentucky Healthcare Workforce Collaborative Advisory Board for the Council of Postsecondary Education and the Ethics & Human Rights Committee for Ky Nurses Association since 2023. She has multiple publications and other important works such as her contributions to a nationally award-winning article 鈥淓CMO Transport in Rural Appalachia: Improving Access through a Nurse Led ECMO Transport Team鈥 published in the ASAIO Journal, Top Abstracts. She has given back through her multiple Faculty teaching appointments at both UK and KSU nursing programs where she has worked as an Assistant Professor, Clinical Instructor, DNP Project Chair and NP Preceptor.
Dr. Coles also makes time for her many interests including community service through her active membership in her graduate community-based chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, with charitable hours in promotion of health policy awareness, patient advocacy and wellness initiatives. Dr. Joy Coles continues to serve an Advocate, Nurse Practitioner, Professor with a comprehensive focus through teaching and scholarship in nursing. Dr. Coles is grounded and strengthened by her Faith, love for family, with a supportive husband and four teenage children, and support from mentors and friends. With deep resolve to make an impact in the Nursing profession, Dr. Coles hopes to expand and excel in service for many more years to come.
